"In the Belly of the Whale" - A Theatrical Coproduction between Tunisia and Croatia

"In the Belly of the Whale" (Fi Batn El Hout, in Arabic), the first theatrical coproduction between Tunisia and Croatia, is an original creation written and directed by Marwa Manai. Realized in partnership between the Tunisian National Theatre (TNT) and the Croatian National Theatre of Rijeka, this play will be presented for the first time on January 24th and 25th at 7:00 pm, and on January 26th at 5:00 pm, at the Salle Le 4ème Art in Tunis.

This deeply human work invites the spectator to a poetic reflection on overcoming barriers, whether physical, mental, or spiritual.

Marwa Manai drew inspiration from the texts of several contemporary authors, including Iva Papić, Dorotea Šušak, Samia El Amami, and Mouna Ben Haj Zekri, to offer a rich narrative that weaves together intimate and universal stories about the desire to cross into the unknown.

On stage, a cosmopolitan troupe brings these stories to life: Sonia Zarg Ayouna, Nadia Belhaj, Thawab Aidoudi, Allam Barakat, Mario Jovev, Serena Ferraiuolo, and Edi Ćelić. Together, they create a theatrical experience that serves as a bridge between cultures, inviting the audience on a journey that explores humanity's eternal quest for freedom and transcendence.

The play's synopsis questions the great challenges of humanity: "Between yesterday, today, and tomorrow, there is eternity. Since the origins, humans have sought to overcome barriers: digging tunnels, building bridges, designing ships or airplanes, and even conquering space. But one barrier remains, fragile and intangible, held by a thread."

Marwa Manai, known for her innovative approach, combines writing, directing, and pedagogical transmission. With previous works such as Untitled or her interactive project Ancra-je, she explores complex themes like identity, resilience, and human bonds, pursuing her ambition to push the boundaries of contemporary theatre.
