Students Lead Claude Usage as Education Overtakes Work
In May 2026, Tunisia accounted for 0.27% of global Claude usage, up from 0.23% in April, according to the latest edition of the Anthropic Economic Index. When adjusted for its working-age population, the country posts an AI usage index of 1.40—40% higher than expected based on demographic weight—ranking 48th out of 121 covered nations.
The Shift in Usage: Education Dominates, Work Declines
The standout trend lies in the nature of these interactions: over half (51.52%) of conversations in May were tied to academic and university settings. In contrast, work-related queries dropped from 35.86% in April to 27.94% in May. Globally, the pattern is reversed: professional use dominates at 43.36%, while education accounts for just 16.45%.
Software Development Fades as AI Becomes More Collaborative
Software development, Tunisia’s top category in April (25.32%), has been surpassed by education in May (28.16%). Another key shift: AI use cases focused on augmenting human work rather than automating it now exceed 50%, up from 46.64% a month earlier.
Regional Leadership and Future Opportunities
With an index score of 1.40, Tunisia significantly outpaces regional peers like Morocco (0.90), Algeria (0.56), and Egypt (0.36), though it still trails advanced markets such as Australia (6.40) and France (3.97).
