Tunisia Signs Memorandum of Understanding with TotalEnergies and Verbund for Green Hydrogen Production

Tunisia has signed a memorandum of understanding with French group TotalEnergies and Austrian group Verbund to develop a green hydrogen production project in Tunisia, with the goal of exporting it to Europe via pipeline.

National Strategy for Green Hydrogen Development

This memorandum of understanding is part of the activation of Tunisia's national strategy for the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, launched in October 2023 by the Ministry.

Project Overview

The project, initially valued at €6 billion (approximately 19.8 billion Tunisian dinars), aims to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen per year in its first phase. The goal is to reach a production capacity of 1 million tons per year, with a final investment estimated at €40 billion (approximately 132 billion Tunisian dinars) by 2050, marking the final phase of the project.

Next Steps

According to Wael Chouchane, Secretary of State in charge of Energy Transition, the first phase of this protocol concerns the launch of technical studies for the project. He emphasized that "Tunisia will be the main site in the world for developing green hydrogen with TotalEnergies."

Strategic Importance of Tunisia

Stéphane Michel, General Manager of the Gas, Electricity, and Renewable Energies branch at TotalEnergies, highlighted the strategic importance of Tunisia in the field of renewable energies, particularly solar and wind energy, as well as its proximity to a significant consumption market in Europe.
