Sfax to Host Major Olive Oil Event: Boosting Tunisia’s Global Market Presence
Sfax is set to host a significant economic, scientific, tourist, and cultural event from October 23 to 25, focused on the valorization and commercialization of Tunisian olive oil. This initiative is spearheaded by the Tunisie Zaytouna association, with support from various Tunisian and international partners.
Clear Ambitions: Adding Value and Capturing Global Markets
The stated goal is clear: to increase the added value of the product and gain ground in international markets, with a particular emphasis on Protected Designation of Origin (PDO/AOC) labels as a tool for recognition.
It is essential for the sector to establish a concrete roadmap, drawing on best practices proven elsewhere in the world. While Tunisian olive oil enjoys a solid reputation, it remains largely sold in bulk. Currently, only 14% of exported volumes are bottled, highlighting a significant opportunity for growth.
Three Days of Science, Fieldwork, and Gastronomy
The program spans three days, blending academic insights, practical demonstrations, and culinary experiences:
- October 23: Scientific Conference
Experts and delegations from France, Japan, and Germany will gather to discuss the impact of PDO/AOC labels on market positioning and value creation. - October 24: The "Olive Route"
A hands-on day dedicated to the field, covering the entire production chain from harvesting and pressing to modern production techniques. - October 25: Nutrition and Gastronomy
The event will conclude with a focus on the nutritional benefits of olive oil and its role in Tunisian and Arab gastronomy, culminating in a traditional breakfast.
The Grenoble-Sfax Twinning Committee is among the key supporters of this manifestation.
A Strategic Opportunity for Entrepreneurs
With only 14% of its exports currently packaged, Tunisia’s olive oil sector has considerable room for growth in packaging and brand marketing. Today, much of the added value in these segments is captured abroad.
Therefore, entrepreneurs focused on bottling, PDO/AOC exports, or the development of premium brands have a strong incentive to closely monitor the outcomes of this event. This gathering represents a pivotal moment for transforming Tunisia’s olive oil industry from a bulk commodity supplier into a recognized, high-value brand player on the global stage.
