Government Committed to Developing Agricultural Sector

The head of government presided over a restricted ministerial council on April 15, dedicated to advancing the national strategy for developing agricultural sectors, with a central objective: strengthening food security and reducing dependence on international markets.

The head of government now considers agriculture a pillar of national security. The sector represents nearly 10% of GDP, 13% of exports, and 14% of employment in Tunisia, while also being the main source of income for around 70% of rural populations. In this context, the government has reaffirmed a strategic orientation based on food and water sovereignty. This involves modernizing production systems, using smart and water-efficient agriculture, and strengthening storage capacities to limit the impact of international fluctuations. The Minister of Agriculture presented a report on the sector between 2021 and 2025, as well as the vision for the period 2026-2030. This strategy is based on sustainable, inclusive, and competitive agriculture, with a focus on managing natural resources, improving productivity, and supporting small farmers.

Several key sectors were examined:

  • Grains: The state plans to increase yields, strengthen storage capacities, and encourage the use of Tunisian seeds to achieve greater self-sufficiency, particularly in durum wheat.
  • Olive oil: Priority is given to improving productivity, supporting small producers, and enhancing exports, particularly through high-value-added packaging.
  • Livestock and dairy products: A program to rebuild the national herd is being accelerated, with the goal of improving production and meeting the food needs of livestock.
  • Fodder: Diversification of resources, improvement of quality, and use of non-conventional water resources to secure livestock feed.

The government's commitment to developing the agricultural sector aims to reduce dependence on international markets, improve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture practices. By focusing on key sectors and implementing strategic initiatives, Tunisia aims to strengthen its agricultural sector and ensure a more secure and prosperous future for its population.
