Increase in Circulating Banknotes and Coins in Tunisia in 2023

In 2023, the amount of banknotes and coins in circulation in Tunisia increased by 10.7% to reach 20.842 billion dinars (Mtnd), compared to 18.825 Mtnd in 2022, according to the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

Banknotes account for 97.6% of this total. The annual growth rate of the currency in circulation increased from 9.2% between 2021 and 2022 to 10.7% between 2022 and 2023, according to the BCT report.

The 20-dinar banknotes are the most widely used (12.3 billion dinars), followed by those of 50 dinars (3.9 billion dinars), 10 dinars (3.8 billion dinars), and 5 dinars (72.1 million dinars). Among coins, the 1-dinar coin is the most common (164 million dinars), followed by the 5-dinar coin (139.7 million dinars), the 500-millime coin (61.7 million dinars), and the 2-dinar coin (58.7 million dinars).

Other coins (500, 200, 100, 50, and 20 millimes) are also widely used. Small coins of 1, 2, and 5 millimes remain in circulation.
