Google Strengthens its Artificial Intelligence Offensive in Africa
Google is reinforcing its artificial intelligence (AI) efforts in Africa with the announcement of its first applied AI laboratory on the continent, located in Accra, Ghana. The goal is to support the emergence of African startups capable of reaching a valuation of over $1 billion. The announcement was made on July 1st during the first Google Cloud Summit Africa, held in Johannesburg.
A New Phase in Google's African Strategy
This initiative marks a new phase in Google's African strategy. The company has also indicated that it has exceeded its goal of investing $1 billion in Africa over five years, thanks to investments in digital infrastructure, cloud computing, connectivity, and artificial intelligence.
The Google Africa Applied AI Lab
The laboratory, named Google Africa Applied AI Lab, will be hosted within the AI Community Centre in Accra. It will bring together startup founders from across the continent, Google researchers, and venture capital investors. Selected companies will have early access to the latest AI models developed by Google to transform their ideas into marketable products. Applications are open until August 31, 2026.
Supporting a New Generation of African Startups
The stated objective is to support a new generation of African startups specializing in AI, in areas such as work, content creation, knowledge management, entertainment, and software development. The program is jointly led by Google AI Futures Fund, Google Research, and several financial partners.
Why Ghana?
The choice of Accra is not random. Google had already opened its first AI research center in Africa in Accra in 2019. The work carried out on site focuses on flood prediction, African languages, maternal health, and food security. In 2025, the company also inaugurated the AI Community Centre, supported by $37 million in funding for research, training, and AI skills development.
A New Step for Google
With this new laboratory, Google is taking an additional step. It's no longer just about producing scientific research, but about converting these advances into companies capable of generating economic growth and attracting investment.
Accelerating Competition on the Continent
The launch of the laboratory is part of a set of five new initiatives announced by Google during the Johannesburg summit. These include the creation of a submarine connectivity hub in South Africa, an AI training program, a digital innovation center in Soweto, and an accelerator to support 15 South African startups, as part of a broader commitment to support 50 African startups between 2024 and 2028.
A Strategic Move in the African AI Market
This strategy comes as competition between major technology groups for the African AI market intensifies. While Africa still has few tech unicorns, mainly in fintech in Nigeria, Egypt, and South Africa, Google is now betting on artificial intelligence to emerge a new wave of African tech champions. It remains to be seen whether this bet will allow the continent to develop truly independent companies or reinforce its dependence on the infrastructure and technologies of major American platforms.
