WWF North Africa Launches ECOSAFE WALD IF Project in Tunisia
The WWF North Africa (WWF NA) has announced the launch of a project called ECOSAFE WALD IF in Tunisia, aimed at turning marine waste into a sustainable economic resource.
Beyond Simple Pollution Reduction
The idea is to go beyond mere coastal pollution reduction and turn waste into a development lever for local populations. This project is part of the organization's efforts to restore Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds and develop blue carbon mechanisms in the Gulf of Gabès.
Organized Circuit from Sea to Factory
The project implements a system called "Waste Management Track", which tracks waste from collection at sea to final treatment. Sorted materials are first sent to artisanal cooperatives for upcycling, then to certified plastic recyclers for industrial transformation.
Responsible Waste Management
Materials that cannot be valorized are sent to landfill centers approved by the National Waste Management Agency. The WWF NA also aims to support fishermen's groups and social and solidarity economy actors, with data tracking to measure the real impact of this initiative on their living conditions.
A New Investment Opportunity
This emerging sector - collection, sorting, transformation - constitutes a new investment track for plastic upcycling and recycling in Tunisia, a segment of the blue economy that is still poorly structured but supported by international organizations as part of the pollution reduction efforts in the Tunisian coastal area, particularly in the Gulf of Gabès.
