19th Edition of the Global Peace Index 2025 Reveals a Global Trend of Deteriorating Peace
The 19th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 reveals a global trend of deteriorating peace, marking the 13th decline in 17 years and the sixth consecutive year of decline. This report, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), ranks 163 independent states and territories, covering 99.7% of the global population. Tunisia ranks 81st globally and 6th among Arab and African countries analyzed in this benchmark ranking.
What is the Global Peace Index?
The Global Peace Index is a measure of "negative peace," i.e., the absence of violence or fear of violence. The ranking is developed from 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators grouped into three key domains:
- Level of societal safety and security
- Extent of ongoing domestic and international conflicts
- Degree of militarization
To calculate the composite global score, the IEP assigns a weighting of 60% to internal peace and 40% to external peace. This weighting is based on the idea that a higher level of internal peace is likely to correlate with fewer external conflicts. All indicators are normalized on a scale of 1 to 5. Over the past year, eight of the 23 indicators have improved, 13 have deteriorated, and two have remained unchanged.
