Algeria Signs Three Agreements with Niger and Nigeria for the Construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline

Algeria has signed three agreements with Niger and Nigeria for the construction of the trans-Saharan gas pipeline, which will transport African gas to Europe. This pipeline will not only transport gas to Germany but also supply countries in the Sahel region through which it passes.

On Tuesday, February 11, in Algiers, Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger concluded an agreement to accelerate the implementation of the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project (TSGP), which spans over 4,000 km. The project aims to transport Nigerian gas to Europe, as indicated by the Algerian official news agency APS.

The TSGP is expected to transport billions of cubic meters of Nigerian gas to Algeria via Niger. Subsequently, the gas can be transported to the European Union through the Transmed pipeline, which connects Algeria to Italy via Tunisia, or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported by methane tankers. The three signed agreements consist of a feasibility study, a compensation agreement, and a non-disclosure agreement between the energy companies of the three countries.

The feasibility study will establish the necessary budget for the works and estimate the time required to complete the project, according to Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab.

The pipeline will cover a distance of 4,128 km and will cross the three countries. An initial estimate of the cost made in 2009 had advanced the amount of $10 billion. After being put on hold, this project has regained importance due to the renewed interest in natural gas and the excessive cost of energy, particularly after the war between Russia and Ukraine.
