Foreign Funding of Tunisian Associations Raises Concerns

Certain associations in Tunisia receive significant foreign funding, sparking concerns about their impact on the country's politics. President Kais Saied addressed this issue during his meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), Fethi Zouhair Nouri, on September 16, 2024. During this meeting, the Governor presented the President with the annual report of the Tunisian Financial Analysis Commission (CTAF).

According to the official statement, President Saied emphasized the crucial role of the CTAF in monitoring these funds, particularly when they are used for political purposes, which violates Tunisian laws.

He cited concrete examples, such as an association that received nearly 9.6 million dinars by August 28, and another that received over 255,000 dinars. These figures, backed by official documents, demonstrate the magnitude of the funds involved.

The President also stressed the need to report these foreign funds to the CTAF to verify their origin. By strengthening control over these funds and transmitting them to the judiciary if necessary, the commission can contribute to preventing their use for political purposes, thereby protecting Tunisia's sovereignty.
