Cooperation between Tunisia and the International Telecommunication Union at the Heart of a Meeting in Davos

A meeting was held on Monday, January 20, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, and the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin. During this meeting, the Secretary-General highlighted the important role of Tunisia in the World Summit on the Information Society and in the digital transformation.

The Minister expressed Tunisia's support for the ITU's strategy and project, which aims to provide cutting-edge solutions to initiate a universal digital transformation and innovative solutions to the challenges faced by developing countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. He also recalled the initiatives taken by Tunisia, at the political and institutional levels, to stimulate and develop the digital economy in order to maximize its potential, particularly in the sectors of employment, energy transition, health, and education.

He proposed studying opportunities to strengthen collaboration with the ITU and defining shared objectives for the future, including the implementation of 5G technologies, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity protection, and universal access to digital technology in remote and underserved regions. Furthermore, the Minister reaffirmed Tunisia's constant commitment to implementing the Tunis 2005 Action Plan of the World Summit on the Information Society and emphasized the importance of the current review of this plan by the United Nations Secretary-General, two decades after its adoption.

Ms. Bogdan-Martin, for her part, highlighted Tunisia's continued involvement in the various committees and bodies of the ITU, emphasizing its solid commitment to the World Summit on the Information Society and the promotion of digital transformation, particularly through the recommendations of the Djerba 2022 Francophonie Summit Declaration. In this context, the Secretary-General expressed her appreciation for Tunisia's priority axes for the coming years in terms of digital transformation, underscoring the organization's total commitment to supporting Tunisia in their implementation. She also reviewed the program of events planned for the current year in the context of the review of the results of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) and urged Tunisia to engage actively in it.
