Meeting between Tunisian Foreign Minister and FAO Director-General Focuses on Food Security Strategy
During a meeting between Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu on the sidelines of a working visit to Italy, several topics were discussed, with the most important being the strategy to achieve food security.
Minister Nafti highlighted the new challenges countries face in ensuring food security, a top priority in a world suffering from climate change. Since 1960, the beginning of Tunisia's cooperation with the FAO, the organization has made considerable efforts to help Tunisia achieve food security, combat hunger, and realize the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
He emphasized his ambition to see the FAO propose a more targeted and effective strategy to achieve the expected results and reiterated Tunisia's commitment to the organization's efforts and those of its members to establish the foundations of a more just and sustainable world. The minister called for reaffirming multilateral cooperation mechanisms to address growing challenges such as climate change, health crises, armed conflicts, and water scarcity.
Regarding water resources, their scarcity poses a threat to the food security of millions of people, and collective effort is needed to find adequate solutions to these problems. In this context, he recalled Tunisia's initiative to dedicate 2025 to the theme "Strengthening Multilateral Action and Consolidating Cooperation and Partnership with the United Nations System".
The FAO Director-General stated that change will only be effective if everyone's efforts are combined to confront and overcome growing challenges. He also recommended adopting sustainable agricultural practices while investing in research and development in all areas related to food security, drawing on global expertise. Tunisia's know-how can also help strengthen FAO initiatives and improve their effectiveness.
