National Council of Regions and Districts to Examine Five Solar Energy Bills
The National Council of Regions and Districts is set to examine five draft bills on May 13, 2026. These bills pertain to concession agreements for solar energy production in several areas of Sidi Bouzid, Gafsa, and Gabès, including El Khobna, Mezzouna, El Ksar, Segdoud, and Menzel Habib.
Background
According to the Tunisian News Agency (TAP), "these projects are part of the national energy transition strategy," aiming to develop electricity production from renewable energy sources. The file has already been reviewed by the Assembly of People's Representatives, although the vote was not unanimous. The topic has also been the subject of significant discussions within institutions and among stakeholders.
Preparatory Work
In preparation for the next stage, a study day was organized with energy and engineering experts to delve into the technical and legal aspects of the projects. The President of the Council, Imed Derbali, stated that these projects aim to strengthen the country's energy sovereignty, attract investments, and support regional development.
Key Objectives
Derbali emphasized the need for a legal framework adapted to the energy transition, which must encourage private investment while preserving national interests. He highlighted Tunisia's significant solar potential, which can reduce energy dependence and create jobs, particularly in inland regions.
Consultation and Examination
The Investment and International Cooperation Committee has conducted several hearings with the concerned ministries and the CONECT organization to enrich the examination of these projects. The upcoming review by the National Council of Regions and Districts is a crucial step in the legislative process, aiming to promote the development of renewable energy in Tunisia.
