Ghana to Introduce Electronic Visa System
Ghana will introduce an electronic visa system (e-visa) starting from the first quarter of 2026, announced Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the closing of the 2025 Diaspora Summit held in Accra the week of December 20, 2025. This reform aims to simplify entry procedures into the country and modernize consular administration.
Key Features of the New System
The new system will allow foreign travelers to submit their visa applications entirely online, without having to physically visit an embassy or consulate. Ghana intends to reduce processing times, facilitate administrative procedures, and offer a smoother experience for visitors traveling to the country for tourism, business, or family reasons.
Part of a Broader African Trend
This initiative is part of a larger African trend towards digitizing migration services. Several countries on the continent have already adopted digital visa systems to attract more visitors, stimulate tourism, and strengthen their global economic competitiveness.
Focus on the African Diaspora
One key aspect of this reform is the attention given to Africans in the diaspora. The Ghanaian government plans to offer preferential conditions, including reduced visa fees, to members of the African diaspora. The principle of reciprocity will also be applied, with adjustments to fees based on the practices of the applicants' countries of origin. This measure aims to strengthen historical, cultural, and economic ties between Ghana and African communities abroad.
