Tunisia to Become a Key Player in Energy Transition between Africa and Europe by 2028

By the end of 2028, Tunisia is set to become a crucial actor in the energy transition between Africa and Europe, thanks to the ambitious Elmed project. This initiative involves the construction of an underwater electrical cable connecting the Tunisian Cap Bon to Sicily, Italy, marking the first direct interconnection between the two continents. As a result, Tunisia will be positioned as a strategic energy hub in the Mediterranean.

Project Overview

The Elmed project has a total budget of €1 billion, with €460 million allocated to the construction of the electrical cable, which has been entrusted to the Italian company Prysmian. Prysmian was selected after a tender process conducted by Terna (Italy) and the Steg (Tunisia).

Objectives and Benefits

The Elmed project is part of a broader effort to strengthen energy transition between Tunisia, North Africa, and Europe. Its objectives include:

  • Improving energy security
  • Creating a green corridor for hydrogen and clean energy
  • Achieving climate goals
  • Generating sustainable employment opportunities

Global Gateway Program

The Elmed project is also part of the European Union's Global Gateway program, which aims to invest €300 billion by 2027. This program underscores the EU's commitment to supporting sustainable development and energy transition in Africa and beyond.

A New Era of Cooperation

The Elmed project represents a strong example of green cooperation between Europe and Africa, marking the beginning of a more sustainable, secure, and solidarity-based future for both sides of the Mediterranean. As a key player in the energy transition, Tunisia is poised to play a vital role in shaping the region's energy landscape and promoting a greener, more prosperous future.
