Electricity Production in Tunisia Sees Slight Decline in 2024
Production Reaches 15,270 GWh, with Renewable Energy on the Rise
Tunisia's electricity production has experienced a slight decline of 1% as of September 2024, totaling 15,270 GWh, including renewable energy self-production. Despite this, production for the local market has increased by 2%, while electricity purchases from Algeria and Libya covered 14% of local market needs. The Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) remains dominant, accounting for 96% of national production.
Shift towards Renewable Energy
The production of electricity from natural gas has decreased by 2%, while the share of renewable energy in total production has risen to 5%. This shift towards cleaner energy sources is a promising trend for Tunisia's energy landscape.
Peak Consumption Reaches New Record
Peak consumption has increased by 1.3%, reaching 4,888 MW, and setting a new record on August 14, 2024.
Electricity Sales Experience Slight Decline
Electricity sales have decreased by 1% compared to the previous year, with a notable 9% decline for high-tension customers. Medium-tension customers, on the other hand, have experienced stability.
Petroleum Sector Sees Significant Decline
The production of crude oil has plummeted by 14%, totaling 1,016,000 tons as of September 2024. This decline has affected several production fields, including Ashtart (-26%), El Hajeb/Guebiba (-35%), and Maamoura (-87%). However, some fields have seen an increase, such as Adam (+8%) and Bir Ben Tartar (+86%). The average daily oil production has decreased from 33.9 to 29.2 thousand barrels per day over the same period.
