Commission Holds Hearing on E-Commerce Law Project
The Commission responsible for organizing and developing administration, digitalization, governance, and anti-corruption efforts held a hearing session yesterday with representatives from the Ministry of Commerce and Export Development. The meeting focused on the draft law n°42/2024 related to online sales via websites and social media.
E-Commerce Growth in Tunisia
During the session, the Chief of Cabinet of the Minister of Commerce and Export Development highlighted the continuous growth of e-commerce in Tunisia over the past few years.
- 2.2 million online payments were recorded in 2024, representing a 13.4% increase compared to 2023.
- 1,126 websites now allow electronic payment.
Challenges and Concerns
However, the Chief of Cabinet also pointed out that 86 consumer complaints have been filed since the beginning of 2025, revealing recurring issues such as:
- Non-conformity of products
- Lack of guarantees or purchase receipts
Legislative Framework and Challenges
Although a legislative framework is in place, including laws from 1998 and 2000, several challenges persist, including:
- Control and traceability of online sellers
- Regulation of delivery services
Measures to Address Challenges
To address these challenges, the Chief of Cabinet outlined several measures, including:
- The creation of a National E-Commerce Committee
- The establishment of a trust label for online sales websites
