Africa: A Market with Untapped Potential for Tunisian Exporters
Africa is often perceived as an underexploited market by Tunisian exporters. The reasons cited are numerous, but the lack of direct air links with major sub-Saharan markets is frequently mentioned as one of the main obstacles. However, this explanation is not sufficient on its own. Beyond logistics, the issue of structuring the African market also arises. It is still difficult for a Tunisian industrialist to build a solid forecast, due to the absence of recurring and predictable demand. This instability is exacerbated by persistent political volatility in several countries in the region.
Key Statistics
The figures confirm this trend. During the first eight months of 2025, Tunisian exports to sub-Saharan African countries reached 479.4 MTND, compared to 600.1 MTND during the same period in 2024. For comparison, our trade with a European country like Poland has already surpassed that recorded with all sub-Saharan countries combined. In 2023, Tunisian exports to this region had established themselves at 711.2 MTND, confirming the current downward trend.
Increasing Imports from Sub-Saharan Africa
On the other hand, imports from sub-Saharan Africa have shown an inverse evolution. They reached 336.5 MTND by the end of August 2025, recording a 52.2% increase year-over-year. This dynamism shows a growing interest of Tunisia in the African continent, which is also reflected in its engagement in regional initiatives such as the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (Zlecaf).
A Continent Full of Opportunities
It is essential to remember that Africa represents a genuine opportunity, particularly in the service sector and high-value-added activities. Tunisian skills in these areas are recognized and could allow for the creation of sustainable and mutually beneficial business flows. The potential for exchange is real, and the continent is also rich in talent and expertise in many sectors.
