Tunisian Customs Seize Goods Worth 547 Million Dinars in 2024
Chokri Jabri, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Customs, announced on national radio yesterday that the Customs Guard units have recorded a total of 15,646 reports in 2024. These interventions have led to the seizure of goods with an estimated global value of 547 million dinars (Mtnd), demonstrating an intensification of efforts in the fight against smuggling.
Diverse Range of Seized Goods
The detailed breakdown of seizures reflects the diversity of products involved in these operations. Notably, among the intercepted goods are:
- 18 kg of gold and 288 kg of silver, precious metals often used in international smuggling networks.
- 1.6 million euros in confiscated currency, a significant amount highlighting illegal financial flows through informal circuits.
- 390 cartons of cigarettes and 168,000 liters of fuel, goods frequently introduced through illegal channels, particularly in border regions.
- 103,000 pairs of shoes, 118,000 tons of dried fruits, 130,000 vehicle spare parts, and 617 tons of food products.
These figures testify to the scope of trafficking affecting various economic sectors.
Customs Efforts to Combat Smuggling
This report highlights the efforts deployed by the Tunisian customs to counter smuggling activities, which pose a threat to the national economy, public security, and state tax revenues. These seizures are part of a global strategy to strengthen border control, dismantle illegal networks, and protect local industries from unfair competition. According to Chokri Jabri, these results encourage continued and intensified surveillance operations, particularly in strategic areas where trafficking is most active.
