Private University Reform Proposal Presented to Parliament

Today, Wednesday, February 5, a proposal to reform the law governing private universities was submitted for discussion in Parliament. The reform proposes to require higher education institutions to recruit 30% of Ph.D. holders.

Regarding the management of the situation of their employees who work with the public sector, the proposal remains difficult to implement, as it falls under the Labor Law and requires harmonization with professional organizations, according to the Minister of Higher Education.

85 institutions have been identified, employing 6,000 professors, both permanent and temporary, for a total of 53,000 students. The Minister added that a set of measures has been taken to reform and develop the sector and make strategic choices.

Deputies were divided on the adoption of this reform, with one group wanting to postpone the reform to avoid undermining other university degrees, another seeing it as a solution to absorb unemployed Ph.D. holders, and a third group criticizing the increase in the number of private universities, viewing it as a sign of the degradation of public higher education.
