DHL to Invest €500 Million in Healthcare Logistics in Africa and Middle East
DHL, the German giant, is set to invest approximately €500 million in the healthcare sector in Africa and the Middle East over the next five years. The company is focusing particularly on Africa as a key growth zone, targeting shipments that require specific and rapid delivery, such as vaccines, stem cells, and applications related to the transportation and storage of materials at extremely low temperatures.
American and Chinese companies are already intervening in this domain, investing heavily to reduce costs. This creates an opportunity to respond to the growing demand for pharmaceutical products in Africa, where the market size is estimated to reach €29.3 billion by 2030. The continent is experiencing the fastest population growth in the world, with serious healthcare access issues.
DHL's implantation in Africa and the Middle East is part of a global investment plan of €2 billion. Most of DHL's operations in the region, including warehousing, packaging, and supply chain management, are based in South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. These hubs will benefit from the new wave of development.
DHL recently collaborated with China to establish a production facility for specialized medical devices in Kenya, which is exported to the Middle East and Europe.
Once again, Tunisia is not included in these strategies, despite its favorable geographical position and developed pharmaceutical industry.
