Construction of 100 MW Solar Power Plant in Sbikha, Kairouan, Underway
The construction of the 100 MW solar power plant in Sbikha, Kairouan, kicked off on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, according to a statement from the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy.
This project is part of a larger initiative aimed at producing 500 MW of electricity from solar energy across five governorates: Gafsa, Kairouan, Sidi Bouzid, Tataouine, and Tozeur. The goal is clear: to reach 35% of renewable energy in the country's energy mix by 2030, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting a greener and more sustainable economy.
The objective of this station, which spans over 200 hectares, is to diversify energy sources through the use of clean energy and reinforce Tunisia's energy transition. The total cost of the solar power plant amounts to approximately $86 million, financed by institutions such as the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
"Once operational by the end of 2025, this renewable energy power plant will create over 40 jobs and reduce electricity production costs by approximately 50 million dinars per year, currently spent on natural gas," stated Wael Chouchene, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry, in charge of Energy Transition.
