DecarboMED: Tunisian Banks Must Play a Key Role in the Country's Economic and Environmental Transformation

During the first edition of DecarboMED, the Mediterranean Decarbonation Forum, held on September 24-25, 2024, in Tunis, Neji El Ghandri, President of the Tunisian Banking and Financial Council (CBF), emphasized that banks and financial institutions must take a leading role in Tunisia's economic and environmental transformation. He stressed the importance of mobilizing financial resources to support decarbonation projects adapted to climate challenges.

El Ghandri highlighted the need to develop specific financial tools to encourage companies to engage in energy transition and promote resilient economic models. Currently, Tunisia emits nearly 50 million tons of CO2, mainly from the energy sector, making emission reduction a national priority. The banking sector, according to him, is essential in supporting this transformation by facilitating access to adapted financing.

The CBF President also mentioned the upcoming implementation of a carbon tax, planned for 2020. This measure, he believes, could start at a modest level and gradually increase to finance funds dedicated to energy transition and ecological initiatives.

For El Ghandri, adopting carbon accounting tools is essential to enable companies to precisely measure their ecological impact and optimize their energy performance.

In parallel, public-private partnerships are presented as a key avenue to accelerate this transition. The CBF is determined to actively collaborate with the government, businesses, and international partners to build a sustainable future for Tunisia.
