Energy Balance Deficit Widens in 2024

According to the latest report from the Energy Observatory, which tracks our energy consumption for the first 11 months of 2024, the value of exports has decreased by 12%, while the value of imports has increased by 9%.

The energy trade balance deficit has widened from 8380 MDT in November 2023 to 9869 MDT in November 2024, representing an 18% increase.

The balance of the energy trade depends on three factors: the quantities exchanged, the exchange rate between the US dollar (the currency used for energy transactions) and the Tunisian dinar, and the Brent crude oil price.

While the exchange rate has remained stable and the Brent crude oil price has decreased, the first factor has been affected by a 20% increase in the average price of natural gas imported from Algeria between 2023 and 2024. Additionally, there has been an increase in imports of petroleum products and crude oil, despite a simultaneous increase in exports of petroleum products.
