UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) to Take Place in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11, 2024
The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will be held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, from November 11, 2024, bringing together leaders from nearly 200 countries.
These two weeks of negotiations will be crucial in defining the future of the planet in the face of climate change. One year after the COP28 in Dubai, where significant agreements were reached, including the creation of a fund for "losses and damages," the COP29 aims to be the next step in implementing these global commitments.
One of the top priorities of this conference will be to examine the action plans of countries to limit their greenhouse gas emissions. Each nation will be required to present a revised roadmap, aligned with the ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement: to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and not exceed 2°C.
However, beyond these commitments, a major challenge looms: climate finance.
Developing countries, particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, are demanding increased financial support. The group of "least developed countries," represented this year by Malawi, a country severely affected by cyclones and drought, is emphasizing the importance of solid aid to adapt to increasing natural disasters.
The question of financing will therefore be at the heart of the discussions, with the goal of replacing the $100 billion per year fund established in 2009, deemed insufficient.
This COP29 could mark a decisive turning point, not only for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also for providing financial support to the most fragile nations facing an increasingly unpredictable climate.
