Cyberattacks on Small and Medium-Sized Businesses on the Rise

According to the ANSSI (National Agency for the Security of Information Systems), cyberattacks on small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have been increasing in recent years.

In an interview with BDM, Franck Truet, infrastructure manager at cloud provider Blue, shared advice on how to protect against these attacks.

Truet emphasized that unlike large corporations, where cybersecurity awareness is more frequent, SMBs often lack a dedicated IT department and may underestimate the importance of cybersecurity.

However, he noted that cyberattacks are often the result of human error. In large corporations, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) educates new employees on cyber threats from day one, but this practice is not always followed in SMBs, where employees may quickly gain access to internal data, making them more vulnerable to phishing attacks.

To protect against these attacks, Truet stressed the importance of raising cybersecurity awareness among all employees, ensuring each individual understands their role in protecting data and is aware that their credentials can be used by attackers. He recommended implementing regular cybersecurity monitoring procedures, including frequent updates to the IT environment and a comprehensive mapping of the information system to assess risks and vulnerabilities. SMBs must constantly monitor, maintain, and control their IT environment to ensure their security.

In the event of a cyberattack, Truet emphasized the importance of reporting the incident to the ANSSI. In Tunisia, the equivalent agency is the National Agency for Information Security (ANSI).
