How Insurers Can Maximize ROI on AI Investments
How can insurers maximize the return on their investments in artificial intelligence (AI)? This is the question that technology consulting firm Accenture sought to answer in its latest study. The survey was conducted among 263 senior executives in the insurance industry who hold direct responsibility for AI, data, technology, and enterprise transformation.
Key Findings: Fragmented Adoption, Early Gains
The results reveal that fewer than one in four insurers (23%) has successfully scaled AI deployment across the entire company. AI capabilities remain concentrated within small teams, with limited skill development in critical areas such as underwriting, claims, and actuarial science.
However, even with this fragmented approach, AI is already delivering better outcomes for insurers, particularly in revenue growth. The study shows that 81% of surveyed insurers report an improvement of at least 5% in gross written premiums, driven by enhanced pricing, personalization, and cross-selling—key benefits enabled by this new technology.
From Pilots to Enterprise-Wide Intelligence
While AI is already generating tangible revenue gains, most companies are still leaving potential on the table. They need to move from isolated pilot projects to enterprise-wide intelligence. AI should not be treated as a mere technology program but as a growth engine, with clear links between strategy and execution to create measurable impact.
Five Recommendations for Optimizing AI Implementation
Accenture outlines five key recommendations that companies can follow to enhance their AI implementation:
-
Align AI Deployment with Business Strategy
Ensure that AI initiatives directly support the overall objectives of the company. -
Develop AI Skills Within Teams
Combine technical expertise with business domain knowledge to build well-rounded AI capabilities. -
Evolve the Talent Ecosystem
Integrate human-led workflows based on interactions between conversational agents. For insurers, AI agents with initiative represent a significant shift, transforming them from reactive service providers into proactive enterprises. -
Adopt a Two-Speed Data Strategy
Modernize existing systems while supporting AI technologies. Quick wins through short sprints unlock growth and provide immediate efficiency gains, while long-term capability building creates enduring value. -
Formalize a Proactive Compliance Culture
Transform ethical design into a competitive advantage. Insurers that establish governance early—through transparent model documentation, human oversight, traceability, and ethical design—can make trust a differentiating factor in the competitive landscape.
