Risks Associated with Air Conditioner Use in Tunisia
The widespread use of air conditioners in Tunisia, both in offices and homes, is accompanied by often underestimated health risks when the devices are misused or poorly maintained. The National Risk Assessment Agency (ANER), in coordination with the Ministry of Health, warns against the effects of prolonged exposure to poorly adjusted air conditioning. Health authorities remind us that thermal comfort should not come at the expense of health.
Health Risks
According to the recommendations, improper use of air conditioners can cause:
- Irritation of the eyes, respiratory tract, and skin
- Headaches, fatigue, and allergic reactions In some closed environments, particularly offices, a lack of maintenance of air conditioning systems can promote the circulation of bacteria and viruses in the air. The risks are heightened in professional spaces where multiple people share the same air conditioning system, increasing sensitivity to temperature variations and indoor air quality.
Preventive Measures
Health authorities emphasize several simple preventive measures:
- The recommended temperature setting is between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius
- Avoiding sudden changes between indoor and outdoor temperatures to reduce thermal shock
- Regular cleaning of filters is essential to limit the accumulation of dust and microorganisms
- Ventilating closed spaces for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day is also recommended to renew indoor air
- Prolonged direct exposure to air flow should be avoided
By following these guidelines, individuals can minimize the health risks associated with air conditioner use and maintain a healthy indoor environment.
