The Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), now in its sixth year of publication, has become a global reference for evaluating port efficiency based on the time ships spend in port. Developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, it covers 400 ports worldwide.
Global Results
The overall results for 2025 are slightly lower than those of the previous year, marked by an increase in the average ship turnaround time (ships are spending more time in port than before).
Global Leaders
The top of the 2025 ranking is characterized by a massive dominance of East Asia, particularly China. The top five performing ports in the world are:
- Fuzhou (China)
- Dalian (China)
- Salalah (Oman)
- Mawan (China)
- Chiwan (China)
Port Performance and Global Logistics Stress
The report highlights a bidirectional relationship between port performance and global logistics stress. Ports are not just places that suffer from shocks (geopolitical, climate), but they also play active roles, either transmitting disruptions (amplifying them in the logistics chain) or partially absorbing them (mitigating the shocks). "Poor port performance reduces global transport capacity and fuels freight rate increases," the report states. According to the same source, port efficiency relies on four major structural levers:
- Time absorption reduction: Minimizing unproductive waiting times at anchor or in port.
- Operational resilience: Maintaining constant discipline despite the volatility of arrivals.
- Digitalization: The use of digital tools improves predictability and real-time data sharing.
- Governance and coordination: Aligning incentives between public and private sectors is crucial.
Focus on Africa
The African port landscape remains marked by strong disparities, between reference logistics platforms and ports that continue to face several structural challenges. Africa has two ports among the top 20 most performing ports in the world, both located in North Africa. The Tanger Med port in Morocco ranks 6th globally and confirms its role as a major logistics platform in the Mediterranean. On the other hand, Port Said in Egypt ranks 15th globally and is among the most performing ports in the region.
Several African ports are also among those that have made the most progress in recent years. In South Africa, the port of Durban stands out as the world's leading port in terms of annual improvement between 2024 and 2025, with a gain of 479 places in the ranking. Although it still lags behind the global leaders, this evolution reflects an improvement in its functioning. Djibouti is also continuing its rise, reaching 53rd place globally in 2025, driven in particular by better coordination of its port operations. On the other hand, Port Elizabeth in South Africa is among the ports that have made the most progress over the past five years, with a gain of 80 places between 2020 and 2025.
