Egyptian Banks Dominate North African Banking Sector, Capturing Nearly 80% of Top 5 Institutions' Assets
At the top of the ranking, the National Bank of Egypt boasts an impressive balance sheet of $176.1 billion, solidifying its position as the leader.
It is followed by Banque Misr, which reaches $104 billion, with these two heavyweights creating a significant gap with their North African rivals.
The third position goes to Attijariwafa Bank, the first Moroccan bank, with a total of $42.8 billion in assets. This result highlights the growing importance of Moroccan banking on the regional scene.
Behind it, the National Bank of Algeria closely follows, accumulating $41.2 billion, illustrating the competition among the sector's major players.
On the Tunisian side, local banks position themselves more modestly in this ranking. The National Agricultural Bank (BNA) ranks 17th with a balance sheet of $7.7 billion, while the Arab International Bank of Tunisia (BIAT) ranks 20th with assets slightly below those of its regional rivals.
