Monomeris: A Pioneer in Advanced Chemical Recycling
A Promising Project for the Environment, Qualified Employment, and Tunisia's African and European Influence
Millions of tons of complex plastics end up in landfills or incinerators every year due to the lack of cost-effective solutions for recycling them. Monomeris, a French startup founded in 2019, claims to have the answer and is looking to Tunisia to deploy its technology.
A Meeting with the APII
On April 8, 2026, a delegation from the French company Monomeris was received at the headquarters of the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII). The main topic of discussion was the establishment of an advanced chemical recycling unit in the Bizerte region, capable of transforming up to 6,000 tons of plastic waste per year.
Recycling What Others Can't
Unlike traditional mechanical recycling, which is limited to clean and homogeneous plastics, advanced chemical recycling breaks down difficult plastics (multi-layered, contaminated, mixed) into their basic molecules, monomers, to reinject them into new production cycles. This is precisely Monomeris' niche, with compact units designed for medium-sized industrial sites. Monomeris is not hiding its ambitions: the Tunisian project is intended as a springboard to African and European markets.
Why Bizerte?
The quality of local skills, geographical proximity to Europe, and tax advantages make Bizerte a credible strategic site for continental expansion. For its part, the APII presented its support mechanisms, digital tools, and industrial strategy for 2035, focused on the ecological and digital transition of companies - a framework that Monomeris found reassuring enough to consider the next step.
