New Regulation for Iron Equipment in the Public Sector

All iron equipment and materials that have become unusable in the public sector must now be transferred, free of charge and on a mandatory basis, to the Tunisian Steel Company El Fouladh. The company will be responsible for dismantling and cutting them up.

This provision is set by Order No. 423 of September 24, 2025, published in the Official Journal of the Republic of Tunisia (JORT No. 118/2025) on Thursday, September 25. The order concerns all ministries, local authorities, establishments, and public enterprises. It also requires each structure to conduct a complete inventory of the affected assets in the presence of a representative from the Ministry of State Domains and to transmit a copy of the report within a week.

El Fouladh, based in Menzel Bourguiba, is the only Tunisian producer of long steel, primarily intended for the construction and public works sector. The company plays a key role in the national economy by ensuring local supply of reinforced steel bars and participating in the reduction of imports. In recent years, the company has faced difficulties related to the rise in energy and raw material prices, but it remains at the heart of industrial recovery projects. In 2024, the government announced a support plan for El Fouladh to strengthen its competitiveness and preserve its strategic role in the Tunisian steel industry.
