AI Will Never Replace Humans, Says OpenAI CEO

During a conference at the World Economic Forum, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the generative AI tool ChatGPT, revealed that artificial intelligence will never replace humans and that we should not expect it to do more than it can do.

To illustrate his point, Altman gave the example of chess. "Commentators said, 'It's the end of chess. Now that a computer can beat a human, no one will want to watch chess games anymore.' However, chess remains a very popular game, and no one wants to watch two AIs compete."

Altman also believes that AI will help us work at a higher level of abstraction and with greater capacity, and that they have found ways to make ChatGPT useful, despite its current limitations.

As AI progresses rapidly, collective oversight is becoming increasingly important. In December, the European Union reached a historic agreement to regulate AI. The World Economic Forum launched the Alliance for AI Governance to unite industry leaders, governments, academic institutions, and civil society organizations, and promote the responsible, transparent, and inclusive design and deployment of AI systems globally.
