UGTT Issues Strike Warning for Tunisia’s Fuel Transport Sector Amid Unresolved Labor Disputes
TUNISIA — The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) officially issued a sectoral strike warning on Thursday, August 27, 2026, targeting the fuel transport industry. The industrial action is scheduled for September 23–24, 2026, and will impact affected workplaces across the entire country.
Background & Union Demands
The pre-notice follows a strategic meeting of sector representatives held on Wednesday, August 26, at UGTT headquarters. The session was co-chaired by the Deputy General Secretary in charge of the private sector and the General Secretary of the General Federation of Petroleum and Chemical Products.
Citing a steady deterioration in workers’ professional and social conditions, the union highlighted the alleged failure to honor several previously agreed-upon commitments. Two core demands are driving the dispute:
- Full social security coverage for all workers through the National Social Security Fund (CNSS)
- Strict implementation of the collective agreement signed on May 2, 2019
Call for Urgent Intervention
The UGTT emphasized that these critical issues remain unresolved despite ongoing conciliation efforts with all relevant stakeholders. The union is now calling for immediate intervention from social partners to broker a settlement before the strike deadline.
The official strike notice has been formally submitted to multiple government ministries, including:
- Ministry of Social Affairs
- Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy
- Ministry of Interior
- Ministry of Commerce and Export Development
- Ministry of Transport
It was also distributed to UTICA, the National Chamber for the Transport of Dangerous Goods, and the legal representatives of freight and fuel transport companies.
