Germany Confirms Its Status as Europe's Top Medical Cannabis Importer and Second Globally

According to the 2024 "The Global Cannabis Report" by Prohibition Partners, Germany has solidified its position as the leading European importer of medical cannabis and second globally.

In this dynamic market, South Africa has emerged as the African leader, exporting 473 kg of medical cannabis to Germany between January and September 2024, surpassing Lesotho (346 kg), the previous major supplier from the continent in 2023.

Although South Africa only accounts for 1% of Germany's total imports (nearly 40,000 kg during the period), it has broken into the top 10 global exporters, closely following established players like Canada, Portugal, and Spain.

With an estimated market share of over 50% of the European total, Germany remains a magnet for producers. Medical cannabis sales in Germany are expected to reach $534 million by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 2.73% until 2029. This potential confirms the attractiveness of a sector where South Africa, despite still modest volumes, is making strategic gains.
