United Nations and Nippon Foundation Open Applications for 2025 Maritime Law and Affairs Fellowship Program

The United Nations and the Nippon Foundation of Japan have opened applications for their 2025 fellowship program in maritime law and affairs, according to EcoFin.

This program is designed for mid-level government officials and professionals from developing countries, aiming to enhance their skills in international legal frameworks and maritime practices.

The nine-month program consists of two phases: a three-month research and training phase at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, followed by six months of advanced studies at partner institutions. Participants will conduct individual research and write a thesis under academic supervision.

Applicants must be between 25 and 40 years old, hold at least a university degree, and be employed in a maritime-related institution.

The fellowship covers training fees, travel expenses, allowances, visas, insurance, and accommodation.

Upon completing the program, fellows will return to their countries to contribute to the development of global maritime policies and legal regimes in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Note that applications are accepted until September 15.
