Tunisia's 100 MW Solar Power Plant to Soon Enter Production
A 100-megawatt photovoltaic power plant located in Metbasta, in the Kairouan governorate, is set to enter production soon. This project, one of the first to be implemented under the concession system, marks a significant step towards accelerating the integration of renewable energies into the national electricity grid.
A follow-up visit took place on Thursday, September 11, at the site, led by the Secretary of State for Energy Transition, Wael Chouchane, accompanied by Almud Weitz, Regional Director of Infrastructure for the World Bank in the Middle East and North Africa. The Governor of Kairouan, Dhaker Barkoui, the CEO of the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (Steg), Fayçal Trifa, as well as ministry officials, the Director General of "Kairouan Solar Plant", and representatives of the Emirati company AMEA Power, investor in the project, were also present.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Industry, the construction progress has reached 82%. With an estimated investment of $86 million, approximately 270 million dinars, financed by the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and the African Development Bank, the plant spans 200 hectares. Once operational, it is expected to reduce the cost of electricity production from natural gas by nearly 50 million dinars per year.
This project is considered a model for investment in renewable energies in Tunisia and a cornerstone of the country's energy transition and diversification of supply sources.
