European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Appoints New Head of Operations in Tunisia
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced the appointment of George Akhalkatsi as the new head of its operations in Tunisia, effective September 1, 2026. He will succeed Nodira Mansurova in this role.
Responsibilities and Supervision
Based in Tunis, Akhalkatsi will oversee all of the Bank's investments in the country, as well as the implementation of its projects. He will report to Mark Davis, Director General of the SEMED region, which covers the southern and eastern Mediterranean basin.
Experienced Operational Profile
Prior to his appointment in Tunisia, Akhalkatsi held the same position in Armenia, giving him direct experience in managing country operations within the EBRD. He joined the institution in 2009 and has also held various roles at the London headquarters, including in the industry, services, and credit risk management departments. Additionally, he has worked at the Tbilisi regional office.
Professional Background
Akhalkatsi's professional career began in the private banking sector, where he first worked as a lawyer before joining Société Générale and transitioning to finance. In terms of education, he holds a law degree from Tbilisi State University and an MBA from INSEAD, a renowned international business school.
EBRD's Commitment to Tunisia
The EBRD has been present in Tunisia since 2012, with a strategy focused on supporting economic diversification, developing the financial sector, and assisting small and medium-sized enterprises. Since the beginning of its activities in the country, the Bank has invested over €3 billion in approximately 90 projects, with a significant portion allocated to the private sector.
