Tunisian Economy Sees Positive Boost from Tourism and Remittances
The tourism industry and remittances from Tunisians living abroad continue to provide a positive stimulus to the Tunisian economy. According to the latest figures published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), tourist receipts and labor income combined reached 5.8 billion dinars as of May 20, 2026.
Tourism Sector Continues to Grow
Since the beginning of the year, tourist receipts have exceeded 2.4 billion dinars, representing a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This evolution confirms the gradual return of the tourism dynamic, just a few weeks before the launch of the summer season.
Remittances from Abroad Remain a Key Support
Remittances from Tunisians living abroad remain a significant support for the national economy. Labor income reached 3.4 billion dinars, compared to 3.2 billion dinars the previous year, representing a 5% increase.
Improved Foreign Exchange Inflows
This improvement in foreign exchange inflows has enabled the country to strengthen its reserves. Net foreign exchange assets rose to 25.4 billion dinars, representing 105 days of imports, compared to 98 days at the same period last year.
Increase in Cash Circulation
Another indicator on the rise is the volume of banknotes and coins in circulation. As of May 25, 2026, it exceeded 29.4 billion dinars, compared to 23.8 billion a year earlier, representing a 23.3% increase. This figure shows that the use of cash remains prevalent in the habits of Tunisians.
