Food Trade Balance Shows 54% Decline in First Four Months of 2025
According to a report published by the National Observatory of Agriculture (Onagri), the food trade balance recorded a surplus of 633.3 million Tunisian dinars (Mtnd) during the first four months of 2025, compared to 1,387.6 Mtnd during the same period in 2024, representing a 54% decline.
As a result, the import coverage rate by exports decreased from 159.3% at the end of April 2024 to 126.9% at the end of April 2025.
This evolution is explained by a 19.9% decline in exports, contrasting with a slight 0.6% increase. The main affected products are olive oil (-28.2%), fishery products (-23.6%), and dates (-16.0%).
The decline in olive oil export value is mainly due to a 53.5% drop in the export price, which stands at 12.73/kg.
On the other hand, decreases were recorded for cereal imports (-14.7%), sugar (-44.6%), and vegetable oils (-44.5%).
Regarding import prices for cereals, durum wheat prices decreased by 19.4%, and soft wheat prices decreased by 1.8%, while barley and corn prices increased by 5% and 8.1%, respectively. Sugar prices dropped by 34.2%, whereas vegetable oil prices rose by 25.1%, and dairy product prices increased by 10.5%.
