National Crude Oil Production Sees 9% Decline in May 2025
According to the Energy and Mining National Observatory's report on the energy situation for May 2025, national crude oil production reached 524 kilotons (kt) at the end of May 2025, marking a 9% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
Decline in Major Oil Fields
The majority of major oil fields saw a decline in production, including:
- Nawara (-50%)
- Ashtart (-21%)
- El Hajeb/Guebiba (-24%)
- Barka (-77%)
- Gherib (-22%)
- Halk el Manzel (-14%)
- Sidi Marzoug (-5%)
- Adam (-5%)
Increase in Some Oil Fields
On the other hand, some oil fields showed an increase in production, including:
- Ezzaouia (+109%)
- Gremda/El Ain (+125%)
- D.S.T (+65%)
- M.L.D (+13%)
- Bir Ben Tartar (+15%)
Daily Average Oil Production
The daily average oil production decreased from 29,800 barrels/day at the end of May 2024 to 27,300 barrels/day at the end of May 2025.
National Consumption of Petroleum Products
A slight decrease of 1% was observed in national consumption of petroleum products, reaching 1,809 kilotons of oil equivalent (ktep) between the end of May 2024 and the end of May 2025.
Breakdown of Consumption
This decrease is marked by a decline in demand for:
- Gasoline (-5%)
- Diesel (-4%)
- Fuel (-24%)
While demand for petroleum coke increased by 4%.
Structure of Consumption
The structure of consumption has remained relatively unchanged, with a slight decrease in the share of diesel (from 45% to 43%) and gasoline (from 19% to 18%), while the share of LPG increased from 18% to 20% over the same period.
Road Fuel Consumption
Road fuel consumption decreased by 4%, representing 61% of total petroleum product consumption, while LPG consumption increased by 11% and petroleum coke consumption increased by 4% (mainly used by cement factories, with alternatives like natural gas and heavy fuel oil).
Aviation Kerosene Consumption
Finally, aviation kerosene consumption decreased by 5% at the end of May 2025 compared to the previous year.
