Tunisia Accelerates Road Signaling Modernization to Enhance Driver Safety
Tunisia is speeding up the modernization of its road signaling to improve driver safety and reduce the risk of accidents caused by poor visibility on the roads.
Ministry Announcement
The Ministry of Equipment and Housing announced on Thursday, May 7, 2026, the completion of the second test field dedicated to horizontal road marking on the A4 highway connecting Tunis to Bizerte. This operation is part of a strategy to strengthen road visibility during the day and at night, and to improve the quality and durability of ground signaling.
Project Details
The project brought together more than 15 Tunisian, Algerian, and Libyan companies specializing in the manufacture of road paint, glass beads, and horizontal signaling work. Experts from the sector, the Center for Testing and Construction Techniques, and the Technical Center for Chemistry also participated in this experimentation.
- Nearly 40 different formulations of signaling materials were applied and tested using a scientific approach to evaluate their effectiveness in the field.
- The ministry specifies that these tests will be monitored over a period of ten months through several technical tests, in the laboratory and on site.
- The evaluations will focus on the level of luminous reflection during the day and at night, resistance to wear and tear and weather conditions, color stability, and the quality of adhesion to the road surface.
Objectives and Expected Outcomes
According to the ministry, these experiments will allow for the selection of the most performing solutions that conform to national and international standards.
- The goal is to improve the quality of road infrastructure while strengthening user safety through better visibility of ground markings.
- The Ministry of Equipment believes that this project represents an important step towards the implementation of a modern and sustainable road signaling system based on scientific and technical criteria to improve the durability of Tunisian roads and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents.
