Tunisia to Gradually Phase Out 3G Technology
The Central Bank of Tunisia has issued a notice to banks and the National Post Office to inform them of the launch of the process to gradually phase out 3G technology in Tunisia.
Background
This decision is part of the national digital transformation strategy. In a statement, the shutdown of 3G is scheduled to begin at the end of the first half of 2027.
Impact on Existing Equipment
The Central Bank emphasizes that several devices still operate using this network, including electronic payment terminals (EPTs) and certain mobile payment solutions. The withdrawal of 3G could therefore affect these devices.
Call to Action
The institution asks the concerned establishments to anticipate this stage. They are called upon to:
- Identify equipment dependent on 3G
- Plan their upgrade
- Coordinate with telecom operators
This is to ensure the continuity of services and avoid any technical or operational disruptions for customers.
Objective
With this notice, the Central Bank aims to guarantee a controlled transition to more recent technologies.
