Jumia Exits Algerian Market After 14 Years

After 14 years of presence in the Algerian market, the e-commerce group Jumia has decided to cease its activities in the country. Algeria accounted for only about 2% of the company's gross merchandise value in 2025, according to the financial report published by the Wall Street-listed company.

Strategic Focus on High-Growth Markets

This decision is part of a broader strategy to focus on African markets with the best growth and profitability prospects, in a context marked by increased competition from Asian platforms. According to Agence Ecofin, Jumia, which has already significantly reduced its losses last year, now intends to prioritize countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria, deemed more promising for its development.

Temporary Impact on Financial Results

The group warns that the cessation of its activities in Algeria could temporarily weigh on its financial results, an effect it anticipates in the short term before focusing on its most profitable markets.

Restructuring Efforts

Recall that since 2022, the group has reduced its workforce, ended food delivery, and refocused its activities exclusively on e-commerce. As part of this rationalization effort, it has also withdrawn from certain markets, including South Africa and Tunisia, to accelerate its return to profitability.

Positive Results in 2025

The 2025 financial results reflect the first effects of this strategy. The annual revenue increased by 11% compared to 2024, reaching $188.93 million. An encouraging sign for the company, which now seeks to consolidate its performance on its most promising markets.
