Apple Agrees to Pay $95 Million to Settle Lawsuits Over Siri's Recording of Private Conversations
Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle lawsuits in the United States, where consumers accused the company of recording their private conversations without their knowledge through its virtual assistant Siri. The agreement, signed on December 31 and pending court approval, states that Apple "denies any wrongdoing and presumed liability."
The class-action lawsuit, launched in 2019, alleged that Siri would accidentally activate and transmit these recordings to third parties, violating users' confidentiality. The agreement stipulates that Apple must confirm the deletion of these data and inform users about options related to the storage of information collected by Siri, if they choose to contribute to the improvement of the virtual assistant.
This settlement brings an end to five years of legal battles for the California-based company, which prides itself on respecting users' privacy and the performance of its devices.
