Amazon Expands Satellite Internet Ambitions with Direct-to-Device Connectivity

After launching Amazon Leo to provide satellite internet access, the American giant now aims to directly connect smartphones and other mobile devices from low Earth orbit. This strategy could change the way underserved areas access digital networks.

Amazon's Ambitious Plan

The company has filed a request with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy up to 5,105 low-Earth orbit satellites dedicated to direct-to-device connectivity. The project aims to enable users to make calls, send messages, access data, or use emergency services in areas without traditional mobile coverage. The deployment of this new constellation is expected to begin in 2028.

A Shift in Scale for Amazon Leo

Until now, the network was primarily designed to provide fixed satellite internet access to individuals, businesses, and remote territories. With direct smartphone connectivity, Amazon wants to tackle a much broader market: global mobile coverage. The group plans to rely on partnerships with telecom operators to integrate its space infrastructure into existing networks. The goal is not to replace terrestrial antennas but to complement their coverage in regions where deploying traditional networks is too costly or technically challenging.

Reinforcing the Strategy

Amazon also plans to strengthen this strategy through the announced operation around Globalstar, a satellite operator whose acquisition for approximately $11.6 billion is still pending. This operation is expected to provide the group with strategic resources, including useful frequencies for developing its space communication services.

A Significant Impact in Africa

Africa is one of the markets where this technology could have a significant impact. Several regions on the continent face coverage challenges due to distance, infrastructure costs, or low population density. For operators, satellites represent an alternative for reaching areas where installing fiber or multiplying mobile antennas is not cost-effective. Amazon has already begun to establish its presence on the continent, working with Herotel in South Africa to offer satellite connectivity solutions from 2027, targeting households and small businesses far from traditional fixed networks.

A Competitive Market

However, Amazon is entering a crowded market. SpaceX is developing similar direct-to-smartphone connectivity services with Starlink, while companies like AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global are also advancing in this market. The difference will be made by the ability to quickly deploy constellations, obtain necessary authorizations, and convince mobile operators to partner with these new space networks.
