Amazon and Google Join Forces to Triple Global Nuclear Energy Capacity by 2050
Amazon and Google, along with other major corporations, have signed a commitment to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. This initiative was announced at the CERAWeek conference in Houston.
The initiative has also received support from other companies, including oil giant Occidental and Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer IHI Corp, which have also signed the commitment.
This move is expected to gain more support in the coming months, with industries such as maritime, aviation, and the oil and gas sector likely to join the effort.
The commitment adds to a promise made in 2023 by over 30 countries to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Nuclear energy, which currently accounts for 9% of global electricity production from 439 reactors, is considered a key solution to meet future energy needs.
Major tech companies, including Amazon, have already invested heavily in nuclear energy, seeking to integrate this clean energy source into their projects. Amazon, for example, has invested over $1 billion in nuclear projects and is also exploring small modular reactor projects.
Big Tech companies, such as Meta and Google, are also turning to this emerging technology, which could play a crucial role in powering data centers, major energy consumers.
