Algeria Launches New Automotive Industry Project to Reduce Dependence on Imports
Source: APS
The Algerian automotive industry market is facing a dependence on imports of plastic parts and accessories, which weighs heavily on the national bill and limits the development of a true local value chain. To address this need and strengthen the rate of industrial integration, the authorities have launched a production plant called "General Plastic Injection (GPI)" during a working visit by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb. The future plant, which covers an area of 107,000 m², is located in the wilaya of Tissemsilt, in the commune of Khemisti, in the Sidi Mansour area. It is intended for plastic injection and the manufacture of parts and accessories for vehicles "integrating the most advanced technologies", according to statements relayed by the Algerian Press Service.
A Qualitative Investment to Replace Imports with Local Production
This industrial project is a qualitative investment aimed at replacing part of the imports with local production. The authorities are counting on this unit to support the structuring of a more integrated national automotive sector. According to the information provided, production is scheduled to start in September 2026. The plant will "produce various plastic accessories for the automotive industry integrating the most advanced technologies", which will improve the competitiveness of the national industrial fabric. The project also participates in the valorization of local skills through the localization of industrial know-how and the development of production infrastructure.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond its economic impact, this unit is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for young people in the region, particularly in engineering, technical, and industrial operations. It is also part of the commitments made by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the recovery and relaunch of assets seized by final court decisions, according to the same source.
