UNDP Representative Warns of Triple Climate, Ecological, and Pollution Crisis in North and West Africa

The UNDP Representative in Tunisia, Céline Moyroud, sounded the alarm on the triple climate, ecological, and pollution crisis in North and West Africa during the Africa-France Forum on Ecological and Energy Transition 2025, held today on April 22. She highlighted the urgency to act in the face of alarming figures: a risk of 2°C warming by 2050, West Africa exposed to 250 days of extreme heat, and over 60% of the North African population under water stress.

Although national efforts exist, they are hindered by dependence on fossil fuels and limited access to green financing. The UNDP emphasizes the need to amplify financing, promote a just transition, and integrate environmental and social issues.

This forum is seen as an important platform to strengthen cooperation, create synergies between public and private actors, and define a common vision for a sustainable future. The UNDP calls for tripling renewable energy capacities, doubling energy efficiency, and facilitating access to green finance for local governments and businesses, particularly for young people and startups. The goal is to accelerate the ecological and energy transition to build a sustainable and just future.
